Highlights: Calypso User Days 2025 – Venice

by SPAC Alliance | November 2025 | News

The Calypso User Days 2025, organised by our member CNA, took place in Venice from 29 to 30 October, bringing together the European public transport ecosystem for two days of exchanges, innovation and knowledge sharing.

SPAC Alliance was represented by Mickaël Wajnglas, accompanied by Stefano Pesce (STid), a member of the Alliance. Both contributed to key sessions, highlighting the growing importance of openness, security and interoperability within mobility systems, as well as the links to be built with access control. Here are our key takeaways!

Calypso at the heart of an open and standardised ecosystem

During the closing session of the first day, dedicated to CNA partners, discussions highlighted Calypso’s structuring role in the standardisation and promotion of open solutions for mobility.

Roundtable participants, moderated by Manon Chaix:

  • Anders Selling – ITxPT
  • Ralph Gambetta – Smart Ticketing Alliance
  • Mickaël Wajnglas – SPAC Alliance
  • Javier Valiño – Eclipse Foundation
  • Claudio Claroni – Club Italia

Mickaël Wajnglas shared SPAC Alliance’s vision, analysing the regulatory response and outlining opportunities for technological development. He particularly emphasised:

  • The importance of a European regulatory framework (NIS 2, Cyber Resilience Act) strengthening both physical and logical security for all stakeholders
  • The strategic role of European open standards such as Calypso and our SSCP communication protocol
  • The importance of building technological bridges between ticketing and access control
  • The necessary shift towards sovereign, high-security technologies

The session concluded with a strong call for harmonisation and interoperability.

Calypso beyond ticketing – Towards new use cases

The second roundtable highlighted the emerging use cases of Calypso in fields related to transport.

Roundtable participants, moderated by Philippe Vappereau:

  • Maurizio Locatelli – Interparking
  • Rui Lopo – TML
  • Ludovic Verecque – Groupe CB
  • Stefano Pesce – STid (Member of SPAC Alliance)
  • Mauro De Bernardin – AVM SPA

Stefano Pesce shared his vision of how use cases are evolving and provided concrete solutions to support these new developments:

  • Convergence between secure access control and ticketing
  • Cross-functional use cases enabling a seamless and unified user experience (transport, buildings, public spaces)
  • Migration towards sovereign, secure and interoperable solutions
  • The contribution of Calypso and SSCP communication protocol to protect identities and transactions in various environments

This session highlighted the full potential of the Calypso standard as a universal technological building block, far beyond mobility.

In conclusion

The 2025 edition of the Calypso User Days highlighted three key takeaways:

  • The importance of a technologically sovereign Europe
  • The crucial role of open standards, both for transport and other use cases
  • The relevance of synergies between mobility and access control stakeholders to ensure a seamless user experience without compromising on security

We would like to warmly thank all our hosts (including Manon Chaix, Yann Chermat, Ludovic Teixera Costa, Naomi Ohira and Pierre Terree) for the flawless organisation of this event, as well as all speakers who contributed to advancing our respective work!
