SSCP secures and simplifies visitors management, regardless of the constraints

Visitor management in prisons

This project, carried out in Poland, illustrates how the SSCP protocol and DESFire technology provide an innovative and exemplary response to the challenges of the most demanding environments. This solution combines enhanced security, operational efficiency, and adaptability, thus becoming a model for other facilities around the world.

Issue

Correctional environments are among the most sensitive sites in the world, where any vulnerability can have serious consequences. In Poland, a prison needed to solve a dual challenge:

  • Ensure strict control of visitor access, including at the exit.
  • Neutralize the risks associated with the loss or theft of badges, particularly the leakage of sensitive information or cryptographic keys.

The existing system, lacking automation, did not provide sufficient control over badges, exposing the facility to significant security risks.

Solution

Secure badges with DESFire formatting

Thanks to the SSCP protocol and DESFire technology, an innovative and secure solution was implemented, combining strict control, automation, and protection of sensitive data.

1. Systematic exit control

  • Each visitor must badge at a terminal before leaving the facility.
  • This systematic control ensures that only authorized badge holders can leave, eliminating any unauthorized departures.

2. Self-service badge management

  • Visitors drop off their badges in dedicated terminals after use, without manual intervention.
  • This process optimizes human resources, reducing the workload for staff.

3. Automatic badge formatting

  • When badging at the exit terminal, DESFire data (cryptographic keys and other sensitive information) are automatically erased.
  • This ensures that even in case of loss, theft, or non-return, no sensitive information leaves the facility.

4. Specific advantages of the SSCP protocol

  • Thanks to bidirectional secure communication, the system can erase the keys and all other data by modifying them directly in the badge.
  • Real-time updates of readers and terminals, ensuring perfect synchronization throughout the facility.

Results and Benefits

1. Maximum security

  • Complete badge erasure via DESFire neutralizes any risk of leaking sensitive or cryptographic information.
  • Strict exit control ensures that no unauthorized badge can be used to leave the premises.

2. Operational efficiency

  • Self-service management reduces manual interventions, freeing up time for staff.
  • Visitors enjoy a clear, fast, and secure process without compromising vigilance.

3. Adaptability and sustainability

  • The SSCP protocol offers modularity and flexibility that can easily adapt to other high-security environments.
  • The solution can evolve to integrate additional features based on future needs.

Sector-specific applications

This use case is particularly relevant for other sensitive environments where temporary access management is crucial:

  • Healthcare environments: Badge control for temporary staff or visitors in critical areas.
  • Psychiatric hospitals: Strict control of entries and exits similar to correctional environments.
  • Airports: Management of temporary access for service providers or authorized visitors in secure areas.
  • Sensitive industrial sites: Protection of information and strict control of external contractors.

Why is SSCP V2 the key to this transformation?

  • Advanced security of sensitive data: The erasure and rewriting of keys directly into DESFire badges is made possible by the secure and bidirectional communication of the SSCP protocol.
  • Reliable automation: Reduction of human intervention, minimization of errors, and increased efficiency.
  • Multisectoral adaptability: A solution deployable in various sensitive environments, with exceptional modularity.
